Homemade Meat Sauce

This meat sauce is great to make in a large batch and use for either a big lasanga bake day or freeze in batches for pasta night!

  • approx. 1lbs italian sausage (mild or hot)
  • approx. 1lbs ground beef
  • 1t onion powder or approx 1/3C minced onions
  • 2 cloves crushed garlic
  • 1 28 ounce can of crushed tomatoes
  • 1 5.5 ounce can of tomato paste
  • 2 6.5 ounce cans of tomato sauce
  • 1/2C water
  • 1T white sugar
  • 1t dried basil
  • 1t italian seasoning
  • 1/2t orgenano
  • salt & pepper

Step 1:

Cook the meat, onions and garlic until browned.

Step 2:

Stir in all the tomatoes and water.

Step 3:

Add sugar and spices, then simmer covered for at least 1 1/2 hours, stirring occasionally.

Family Thoughts:

We LOVE this sauce, so much better than store bought.  Make sure you let is simmer, don't skip on that part!  Stay tuned to see how I used it in a pasta dish this week!

  1. This would come in very handy to have in the freezer. Might have to make up a batch of it this weekend. Thanks for the recipe. (Judy Cowan)
