Eggs in a Basket

I've had this at Cracker Barrel in the States before and suddenly decided to try it myself at lunch today.  I didn't look anything up before hand, just went with it, so this may not be the "normal" recipe out there.

Recipe

Ingredients
  • bread
  • margaine
  • eggs (equal number to bread)
  • salt and pepper

Step 1

Butter both sides of your bread.  Use a glass or cookie cutter to make a circle in the middle.

Step 2
Put bread (and the "hole") in a pan that's been pre heated to just over medium.

Step 3

Crack an egg into the hole in the bread, top with salt and pepper.

Step 4
Fry on one side until you know the egg has cooked on the bottom, flip and continue cooking for just another minute or two - you don't want the egg cooked all the way through, you want it to run when cut open.

Step 5

When egg is cooked to your liking serve hot.

Family Thoughts

A fun new way to serve eggs, looks like this little man has a new favourite!

  3. I made these in home ec in high school a million years ago and still make them today. My recipe calls for toasted bread and then baking but it is the same idea. We called them toad in the hole, although there is also different recipe with that name.
Genius idea to cut the hole with a glass and much simpler than cutting a square with a knife! What do you do with the hole? After buttering the toast I eat the hole as an appetizer!
