The Healthy Shopper Winter Picks

Randy Boyer and Andrea Donsky are the health-savvy women behind The Healthy Shopper Picks, have been helping families make healthier choices for food, vitamins, and personal care products.
The Healthy Shopper Picks for Fall 2013 Group Product Photo-600
This past fall, they’ve chosen some food products that will appeal to kids and adults alike, and they’ve picked Pamela’s wheat and gluten-free artisan flour, cake and baking and pancake mixes; Olympic Dairy’s Krema Greek style organic yogurt; Simply Natural’s organic ketchup and mustards; Kiju’s all natural and organic juice boxes (and our favourite!)

 Pamela's Chocolate Cake Mix-200
For its 25th anniversary, Pamela’s has created some easy-to-make recipes that add a healthy twist to school lunches and afternoon snacks.  “Our families love sweets and Pamela’s cake, pancake and bread mixes offer us so many options; and while they’re gluten and wheat-free, I bet that once you’ve tried them you will never know the difference,” says Randy.  “On Sundays, it’s pancake day and my kids’ favourite pancakes are Pamela’s with mashed bananas inside, and sometimes for a special treat I add dark chocolate chips.  They’re easy to make, and a healthier choice that I can feel good about.”   My sister-in-law is gluten-free and she says Pamela's chocolate cake is even BETTER than any gluten-filled "regular" cake she's ever had!

Kiju's juice boxes have always been a favourite around here, my guys love every flavour - especially the pomegranate cherry - it's a flavour you can't get anywhere else!   Canada’s first 100% certified organic juice boxes that are naturally flavoured without any sugar.

Simply Natural Organic Stone Ground Mustard-200
Simply Natural's organic ketchup and mustards were fantastic, tasting just as you expect them to, except they are organic, fat free, with zero trans fats and do not contain high fructose corn syrup, one of the “Scary 7” ingredients the Healthy Shopper recommends avoiding.  My favourite is the stone ground mustard, love the taste and texture.

Olympic Dairy’s Krema Greek style organic yogurt was delicious, the creamiest greek yogurt I've ever had and uses only 100% natural ingredients without preservatives, gelatins or gluten! As in previous seasons,

The Healthy Shopper wants to remind all of us of the importance of watching for the “Scary 7” ingredients on labels: Glucose-Fructose (High Fructose Corn Syrup), Artificial Sweeteners, Monosodium Glutamate (MSG), Artificial Flavours, Trans Fats, Artificial Colours and Preservatives.  As Randy says, “if you can’t pronounce an ingredient, put it back on the shelf, and if a brand doesn’t list its ingredients, maybe you should ask why."

EASY NO KNEAD Overnight Bread Recipe

Our original introduction to No Knead Bread was when Stacey discovered a recipe for it over at Simply So Good. She immediately tried it out and instantly fell in love with the recipe. That was almost two years ago.

Since then, this bread recipe has been served to and tested by many of our friends and family and has quite simply become our "go to" recipe for making bread. It is so easy and it never fails, even if it doesn't fully rise properly because the house is too cold over night (like recently).

Whenever there is a pot-luck, or I want to offer to bring something to contribute to a meal, I offer up this bread. It honestly looks and tastes like I slaved all day to make it and meanwhile, all I did was sleep!

This bread can literally be made in your sleep, it's so easy!

Recipe Round up! 01/17

Check out some of our favourite recipes from this past week, including our over popular No Sugar Added Granola Bars - they will be a family favourite in no time!

What have you been cooking up this week?

Tuna Casserole

A favourite from my youth, I loved it when my Mom made Tuna Casserole and now my kids love it too!

Recipe - Tuna Casserole

  • 1 bag (12oz) of egg noodles
  • 2 cans of flaked white tuna
  • 2 cans of cream of mushroom soup
  • 1-1/2C milk
  • 2C shredded cheese
  • 1C frozen green peas (sometimes I leave these out and serve a different veggie on the side)

Step 1
Boil egg noodles until al dente and drain

Step 2
Mix soup and milk together in a bowl

Step 3
In a casserole dish mix together noodles, soup/milk, tuna, peas and approx 1C cheese

Step 4
Top with remaining cheese

Step 5
Bake at 375 for 40 minutes

Family Thoughts

The whole family loves this, the kids prefer I leave the peas out and we often have corn on the side instead.  Can be made earlier in the day and stored in the fridge until it's time to bake - just increase cooking time.

Milkshake Float

A fun dessert for the whole family, easy to make for a crowd - check out our recipe for a milkshake float!

Recipe - Milkshake Float

  • 2 scoops of vanilla or chocolate ice cream
  • 1C chocolate milk
  • whip cream
  • caramel or chocolate sauce

Step 1
Add your 2 scoops of ice cream to a cup

Step 2
Pour chocolate milk over it

Step 3
Top with whip cream and sauce

Serve with a straw and a spoon

Family Thoughts

We often make milkshakes at home but they can be time consuming for a crowd, these are quick, easy and the kids love them!

Healthy Granola Bars

These granola bars have NO flour, eggs or sugar! AND if you use almond milk instead of regular milk, they become a dairy free snack as well.

I am always on the hunt for homemade granola bars that don't have a ton of honey, maple syrup, corn syrup or sugar in them and I have finally found my recipe. This recipe is going to become a staple recipe in my kitchen. I can see myself making a double batch of these every week.

Get cooking and let Cascade Platinum manage the mess! #PGmom

Only a few days left to snap a picture of your dirty dishes for your chance to Win a weekend trip for 2 to PEI to meet Chef Michael Smith!

That's right, Cascade Platinum invites you to submit photos of your before and your after dishes for a chance to win this AMAZING prize.  I am a HUGE Chef Michael fan, and I'm sure you are too - how great would this be?

With Cascade Platinum's Triple Action Formula - it helps keep your dishwasher sparkling AND your dishes.  I'm a big lover of cascade, I love the ease of which I can pop in a pod and slam the door shut just before the baby tries to climb in the dishwasher (that happens to everyone else too, right?!).

You have until January 19th to snap a picture of the dishes after dinner and when the dirty work is done, take a picture of the sparkling clean dishes.  Then submit your “before and after” photos at!

Butterscotch Pie

We first discovered this pie in PEI, famous in the east coast of Canada, you may also hear it be called Sugar Pie in Quebec.

Recipe - Butterscotch Pie

  • 4 egg yolks, lightly beaten
  • 2C brown sugar
  • 1/2C flour
  • 2T butter
  • 1T vanilla extract
  • 3C milk
  • Pinch of salt

Step 1
Add everything into a double boiler (make sure you remembered to seperate your eggs)

Step 2
Heat over med heat until thickened - stir constantly - will take a good 7-10 minutes

Step 3
Pour into 1 deep dish pre-cooked pie shell, or 2 regular pre-cooked pie shells

Step 4
At this point you could top with a meringue (using your left over egg whites) or leave plain

Step 5
bake at 350 degrees for 10-12 minutes

If you didn't top with meringue, I like to serve with whipped cream on top

Family Thoughts

We all love this pie, the kids, the adults - I could eat it right out of the pot, forget the pie shell!  It's a light flavour, probably lighter than you are thinking right now - which makes is a wonderful afternoon treat with a cup of tea!

Tips & Tricks: Spaghetti and Meatballs

If you are looking for a quick spaghetti night instead of cooking your meatballs seperately in the oven, a tasty and quicker way to serve is adding frozen, precooked meatballs directly in your heated sauce.

When you start boiling your water for your noodles put on a pot of sauce at medium heat and add frozen (precooked) meatballs. Your meatballs will be heated through in the time in takes to cook your noodles and you will end up with a flavourful sauce and meatballs, all in one pot!

The kids love meatballs this way the best, they are soft, easy to cut through and very yummy!
