Healthy Granola Bars

These granola bars have NO flour, eggs or sugar! AND if you use almond milk instead of regular milk, they become a dairy free snack as well.

I am always on the hunt for homemade granola bars that don't have a ton of honey, maple syrup, corn syrup or sugar in them and I have finally found my recipe. This recipe is going to become a staple recipe in my kitchen. I can see myself making a double batch of these every week.

These are a healthier version of your traditional granola bar.
Healthy Granola Bars

Cook time: Approximately 15-20 minutes
Yield: 16 squares or 10 bars
Ingredients:
  • 2 cups large flake oats
  • 1 Tbsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce (or 2 "snackpacks" of applesauce)
  • 2 bananas, mashed
  • 1 Tbsp vanilla
  • 1/4 cup milk (or almond milk)
  • Optional Items: 1/4 cup to 1/2 cup raisins, dried fruit or dark chocolate chips, 1-2 Tbsp Chia Seeds or Hemp Seeds

Instructions:
  1. Mash bananas well.
  2. Add bananas and all remaining ingredients into a large bowl and stir until combined.
  3. Put mixture into an 8x8 square baking pan.
  4. Press down lightly to make mixture evenly spread.
  5. Bake for 15-20 minutes at 350°.

Family Thoughts:

These bars are so delicious! With NO added sugar and all clean ingredients, I feel good serving these to my children on a regular basis, especially in their school lunches.

The children ate these up! They couldn't tell there was no sugar in them and neither could I.

They disappeared quickly!

What are your favourite "add-ins" for granola bars? Chocolate chips? Raisins? Nuts?

A special thank you to my dear friend Shari who is always watching out for me, thanks for helping me out with this recipe! Feel free to visit her over at Knit Wit by Shair!

  2. Do you have any suggestions for making them without bananas? (Yeah, I know... that's what holds them together, right? LOL)

Thanks for any help you can provide!

    1. Hmmmm....you've put me to a challenge this morning, Lisa! Yes, the bananas play a huge part, but let me think on this. I'm wondering if something like 1/2 cup appleasauce and 1/2 cup baby prunes might work!

    2. Stacey wondered if perhaps peanut butter (or even almond butter) would make a good choice - I bet even 1/4 of a cup might work. Worth a try! Shall I test it out Lisa and get back to you?

    4. pureed pumpkin I bet would work in place of the bananas or even dates, prunes or figs {you might have to puree them with a bit of water to get the right consistancy though!
