Why is everyone talking about Coconut Oil?

Coconut Oil has become a bit of a buzz word lately, I was a bit hesitant to look into it further as it seemed like something out of my realm, but I received a jar from The Healthy Shopper and it's everything you heard and more!

First off, it's a bit of a confusing product because it's a solid?  What's up with that?  Well coconut oil is in a solid state at 24°C (76°F) and under and turns to a liquid above 24°C, so if it's a warm day in your house you might find out your coconut oil has turned back into a liquid and that's just fine too!

While probably not the cure-all some website tote it to be, coconut is IS a very useful product and one you can make use of in your home.  Here's just a few of the reasons I've been loving coconut oil..

  • For cooking it has a high smoke point, is a dairy free replacement to butter and can be used in any of your dishes - it does not make everything taste like coconuts, just a a nice, light flavouring
  • Tastes great melted over popcorn
  • Spread over toast instead of butter
  • Mixed with spices for a salad dressing

Not just for eating, coconut oil can be a basic lotion for skin, perfect for dry hands and feet and can be used to condition hair as well!

  3. I am easily confused by coconut oil and I will add coconut water to that state of confusion. I do think that any type of vegetable fat is heart better than animal fat. I do love butter, I hate to admit it!!

  5. I had no clue it was a solid. It somewhat makes sense because a friend of mine claims all kinds of things about it and uses it for everything. She brushes her teeth with it. I want to try it, but mostly for cooking! You said popcorn, that will probably be my first trial! I am also wondering if this would be ideal for camping, as a replacement for butter, as it doesn't go bad?

  6. I started using coconut oil about a year ago. I love it in many things but I can taste the coconut flavour in dishes I make with it. I love it for cooking Thai and other ethnic foods but I can't use it for 'western' dishes. It is amazing on popcorn! I haven't tried it on toast or salad but I have made deodorant with it and used it as lotion.
